Give Up on Resolutions. Start a Revolution, Instead!

Revolutionary1. of, pertaining to, characterized by, or of the nature of a revolution, or a sudden, complete, or marked change: 2. radically new or innovative; outside or beyond established procedure, principles, etc…

So, here we are on the first day of the first week of the New Year. Is today the day you begin your New Year’s Resolutions?

Or, did you begin on January 1?

Or, is your resolution this year never to make resolutions because you can never keep them and you just end up feeling bad about yourself?

24634813_sPerhaps the reason you are unable to keep them is because your New Year’s Resolution is essentially the same one over and over again every year: Turn my entire life upside down and try to overhaul everything about myself that I hate.

Am I right?

Yeah, I thought so.

Is it any wonder that you always “fail” and then beat yourself up being willpower-less? You leave yourself feeling like crap and unworthy of all the good things waiting for you, like the vision of yourself if you woulda, coulda kept your New Year’s Resolution.

This approach rarely works. What does work is what I call (R)Evolutionary Living, which is all about making small, yet, immediate changes in our behavior based on what is truly important to us that add up to big changes over time.

What do I mean by that?

When we change our perspective, change is immediate. We view ourselves through different lenses – lenses of compassion and love, instead of disgust and hatred. You are unlikely to take good care of something you hate. It’s way easier and more fun to take care of something you love!

What I have found is that when we accept where we are, we develop an awareness and a sense of gratitude that allow us to make better choices for ourselves on a daily basis. We no longer have to overhaul our lives, because our lives are actually pretty damn good. We are successful each time we choose what serves us best and that inspires us to continue.

What is your top priority? Perhaps it’s your health. Perhaps it’s clearing up the clutter in your life. Perhaps it’s tending more closely to the relationships in your life. Give yourself a moment to think about it.

Then, pick one teensy-weensy behavior to tweak that you know would help you physically, emotional and/or spiritually. Just ONE. Ask yourself if you did this one behavior consistently, how would your life change for the better?

One of my clients wanted to improve her health. She chose to do two simple things: She stopped drinking soda pop and she began walking for 15 minutes on her lunch break at work. In just six months she lost 35 pounds!

Are you ready to begin your (R)Evolution? Please share your ONE THING below in the comments or participate on Facebook or Twitter with #TweakOneThing.

With love from your partner on the path,

Lisa :-)

  1. There are SOOOO many things I want to accomplish but priority one is I want to get healthier and live happier in 2015. It’s a big ‘un but if I break it down incrementally and take it day-by-day, I will have a better chance at success! Of course, having a great life coach is VERY helpful too ;-)

    • Leah, you’re right about moving forward with baby steps and yes, support from a coach helps you keep your promises to yourself! Wishing you a fabulous 2015! Lisa :-)
